The greatest single source of contamination from homes is the yard!

Overuse of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers can contaminate our groundwater and may not produce the desired results. There are countless ways to cut down on lawn chemicals and still have a great looking yard. Here are some easy things you can do to help out:

• Set your mower blades high. For most turf grasses 2-3" is a good height. Keeping the blades high grows healthier roots for a greener, pest resistant, and drought resistant yard.
• Keep mower blades sharp. Dull blades can tear and weaken the grass.
• Use a mulching mower. They have special blades that chop grass into fine clippings. This will eliminate bags and bags of grass, and automatically fertilize your soil the natural way!
• It's all in the timing. Water your yard only when necessary. If your yard really needs watering, turn on your sprinklers before sunrise and after sunset. Turning them on during the day will waste huge amounts of water. Water evaporates as much as 8 times faster during the day.
• Plant a tree. Can't say enough about trees! They provide shade, improve real estate value, provide wildlife habitat, and pull pollutants out of the air and ground. They even combat global warming by breathing in and storing carbon dioxide.
• Go native! Planting native trees and shrubs is a great way to attract wildlife. Many readily available native plants are drought tolerant, flood tolerant, and practically maintenance free.
